History and Significance of Diwali

According to historical evidences, Diwali is celebrated over the arrival of God Shri Ram with his wife Goddess Sita to their abode after killing Ravana. Hence, this festival marks the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, hope over despair and light over darkness.

Another story symbolizes the birth of Goddess Laxmi during the Samudramanthan after which she choose Lord Vishnu as her husband. Thus, during the festive season, Goddess Laxmi is worshipped.

How is Diwali Celebrated?

The major attraction of Diwali is new clothes, sweets, firecrackers, oil lanterns, and devotion. Diwali marks the entrance of all new things. People prefer Diwali to buy new things like home, vehicles, etc. Women even prepare different type of sweets like Laddus, Mithais, Barfis, etc. for the occasion of this festival. Children are more attracted towards enchanting firecrackers. And so called the festival of lights, houses and offices are decorated with electric as well as oil lanterns.

Different Days of Diwali

Diwali is celebrated for over five days each having its own significance. Below are the five days of Diwali.

#1 Dhanteras: Dhanteras is the first day of the festive season. On the occasion, house and business premises are cleaned and decorated. It is the day when the historic even of Samudramanthan took place and Goddess Laxmi was born. The very day is also the birth day of Lord Dhanvantari – the god of health and medicine. Thus, on the occasion of Dhanteras, Goddess Laxmi in the form of Gold and Silver are worshipped. People even buy Gold and Silver products on this very day. On the same day God Dhanvantari is also worshipped.

#2 Naraka Chaturdasi: Also known as Choti Diwali, Narak Chaturdasi is the second day of Diwali. On this day, people get up early in the morning before the sunrise and take the holy bath using fragrant oils, soaps, etc. Women on this day color their hands and feet with Henna designs.

#3 Diwali or Lakshmi Pujan: This is third and the main festival day of Diwali on which people wear new clothes and oil lamps are lit all over the house as the evening approaches. In the evening, Goddess Lakshami is worshipped along with Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati and Lord Kubera. After the puja firecrackers are lit and enjoyed by small as well as elders. Soon after, homemade sweets are distributed within friends and family and enjoyed.

#4 Balipratipada: Also known as Padwa, Balipratipada is the fourth day of Diwali. On this occasion, head of the family bring gifts to all the family members as a token of love and affection. On the very day husbands give thoughtful gifts to their spouses.
